Supporting Families Affected by H.I.E.

How we funded a weekend break that brought families together and opened up new experiences

A Weekend Together

When Sarah and Steve’s daughter Heidi was born, they learned she had H.I.E. – hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy. It’s when the brain doesn’t get enough oxygen, which can cause lasting injury.

They soon realised there was no UK charity dedicated to supporting families like theirs. So in 2018, they set up Peeps, named after friends’ nickname for their daughter: “Heidi-Peeps.”

A break for families

Activities like canoeing, climbing, and archery can be difficult to access for families affected by H.I.E. The practical challenges often get in the way.

Peeps came to us with a plan for a weekend break at Bendrigg Trust. We provided funding so families could try these activities together in a safe, accessible environment.

The weekend gave families a chance to meet others in similar situations. It helped children build confidence and try new things. Parents appreciated how inclusive the venue was, including support with dietary needs.

Feedback was positive. Parents said their children enjoyed the experience and it was good to connect with other families who understood.

What’s next

Peeps is planning another weekend for October 2025. They’re also looking for similar venues across the UK so more families can benefit from this kind of support.

Looking ahead

The weekend was such a success that Peeps is planning another for October 2025. They’re also searching for similar venues across the UK, so even more families can experience this kind of support.

Because every family deserves the chance to make memories together.
